Jamaican Recipe - Rice Porridge (Vegan)

Bowl of Rice Porridge with Fruit

Rice Porridge is a delicious breakfast dish that adds another use for rice, which is a staple in almost every Jamaican diet.

I have decided to share a recipe that I perfected over the holidays. I was introduced to this meal while working as a Dietetic Assistant in one of the largest hospitals on the island. This was prepared for the patients on the children's ward and I was always excited to sample it. Rice is something that is eaten a lot here in Jamaica but is usually savory. It is not something that is consumed as a breakfast or dessert, but with this recipe, it can be served as both because it is just so yummy.

Fry Plantain 'n' Bread

Fried plantains with bread and crackers

This is a very common breakfast choice here in Jamaica and I even had it a few days ago. Normally we will add scrambled eggs but, fried plantains are so sweet that we normally just make a sandwich and call it a day. Although your sandwich is filling, unfortunately, fried plantains and bread do not constitute a balanced meal because plantains belong to the staple group. Plantains do belong to the Banana family, but due to the high content of starch, it is classified as a source of carbohydrates and therefore a staple.

The Benefits of Having a Proper Breakfast

Breakfast is the first meal that you have at the start of the day as it breaks the fast your body takes during sleep.

Most of the time we refer to breakfast we are thinking of the first meal we eat in the mornings after a night’s rest. Breakfast is the first meal that you have at the start of the day as it breaks the fast your body takes during sleep. A fast is usually voluntary abstinence from food or drink, especially as a religious duty, but we use the term to describe going for a certain length of time without eating anything and our seven to ten hours of sleep would be seen as a period of fasting. Most people sleep at night and are active during the day, but this is not always the case. For this reason, this post will be about the first meal you consume after a period of rest, and how its content can give you a boost to have a productive day.
