Smoothies: A Meal in a Cup

What are smoothies, and how can they be used to support a balanced diet

According to Merriam-Webster,  a smoothie is a creamy beverage made of fruit blended with juice, milk, or yogurt, although ice cream is used in some instances. It usually has a liquid base such as water, fruit juice, plant milk, and sometimes dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, ice cream, or cottage cheese.

Although I really like smoothies, I don't have them often but I plan to change that because it's an awesome way to pack in nutrients and fiber into a cup with little to no hassle.  Smoothies can be used as meal substitutes and snacks as they are so filling so they are sometimes consumed for breakfasts or after workouts. In addition to juicing fruits and vegetables, smoothies can also be used to hide foods you would not otherwise choose to eat.

Here is an awesome recipe that I found on the now-defunct Smoothieweb.com

Peachy Watermelon Smoothie

I love watermelon and the fact that it is only in season for such a short time means I try to eat it as often as I can during the few summer months when it is at its most refreshing and sweet. For some reason, I don’t often use it in my smoothie recipes even though watermelon is an incredibly healthy fruit for you. This delicious fruit is packed with some of the most powerful antioxidants in nature, including Vitamin C,  Vitamin A, and Vitamin B7. These reduce the chance of colon cancer, relieve some symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, according to The World’s Healthiest Foods. So here is a summer smoothie recipe featuring watermelon, strawberries, and peaches.

Peachy Watermelon Smoothie Ingredients:

  • 2-3 cups watermelon (seeded)

  • 1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt

  • 1 cup strawberries (frozen)

  • 1/2 cup peach juice (or try 1 peach if you don’t have juice)

You know the drill, add to your blender, and blend until smooth. This recipe makes two glasses.
